The five categories of birth control

Hormonal methods

Hormonal birth control prevents ovulation so that your eggs cannot be fertilised. The pill, the shot, the contraceptive patch, y the vaginal ring are common hormonal options.

Long acting reversible contraception (LARC)

LARC methods include intrauterine devices (IUDs) y implants. An IUD is a T shaped device placed in your uterus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. An implant is a tiny flexible rod placed in your upper arm that releases hormones to prevent ovulation.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods block sperm from entering the uterus. Male condoms, female condoms, diaphragms, y cervical caps fit here, along with spermicidal foams, sponges, y films.

Lasting birth control

Lasting birth control can be surgical (tubal ligation that cuts, ties, or seals fallopian tubes) or non surgical (small flexible implants that block the fallopian tubes).

Emergency contraception

The two most effective methods for preventing pregnancy in the hours following unprotected sex or condom breakage are a copper IUD y emergency contraceptive pills.

How to choose

We consider your age y history, comfort with the method, sexual frequency y partners, y your future family planning goals. If you do not want to start a family soon, an IUD may be a good choice. If you have irregular periods, a hormone based method like the pill may help regulate your cycle.
